Meowy Christmas

For the first time in a long time, I finally want to decorate my house for the Christmas season. I want a big, fat tree, but I’ve seen too many YouTube videos of cats taking down Christmas trees so I’m a little apprehensive about getting one.

Look at this. See what I mean? It’s adorable and all, but it can be dangerous for my fur kids, not too mention tiring for me. I don’t want to clean up all day! Well, I already do that, but let’s not add tassels, broken ornaments, and plastic leaves to the list.

So I decided to make one. I’ve been going on a sewing binge this weekend (I made curtains, a throw, and 2 cushion covers), so I made a prototype of my tree last night. I didn’t have enough felt, so the tree is only 14″ tall. I’ll have to get more fabric this month so in can make a 4 feet tall plush tree!

Have a catty Christmas!

Last week a friend gave me a set of mobile phone ornaments, so I used them as decor for my tree. I think they’re purrrfect!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

I added a topper this morning, a finger puppet from another friend.

Meowy Christmas!

I’ve been having fun making different things last weekend. The stress has been getting to me, so I needed to regroup and get creative again. Hearing the steady sound of the seeing machine was comforting and relaxing. This is going to be a long week, so I’m glad I was able to disconnect and work with my hands again.

Yeah, I think this is just the beginning of my Christmas decor project. I’m having too much fun so why stop with just a tree?

Typhoon Glenda Ramassun

20140716-010746-4066433.jpg

It was eerily silent earlier. They said Typhoon Glenda Ramassun was going to hit Metro Manila early evening. Signal number 3 was hoisted over the metropolis at around midnight. The wind started to pick up around that time then it started to pour at 12:30.

Three of my four fur kids are fast asleep. Ella is keeping my tummy warm. The only one wide awake (aside from me) is my “first born”, Twister, who is standing guard by the fridge. I don’t think the wind will blow that away, sweetie! πŸ˜‰

I decided to house the two stray cats my neighbors and I have been feeding. They said this storm will be a big one, so I didn’t want to risk them getting maimed by flying debris or getting sick out there in the rain. Gato (a.k.a. Siopao) and Rorschach (a.k.a. Hitler) don’t like lodgings I’ve provided for them (my downstairs bathroom); I can hear them complain once in a while. I guess it’s too cramped compared to our driveway, but better to have them in a controlled environment than out there. They will get over it. Hope other stray kitties have found shelter as well.

And I hope the storm passes soon. This is going to be a long night.

Twister's 3rd year

Twister’s 3rd year

Happy 3rd “Founding Day” to my one and only grumpy darling, Twister! He’s my “first born”, my original lucky cat, the one who transformed me into a Cat Mama, who inspired me to make pet portraits, Meow shirts, and help other felines like him. You are purrrfect to me, Mr. Sungit! Purrrrr on!!!

Wednesday on a Wednesday: treat!

20130918-143913.jpg

Wednesday has a fetish for cotton buds. She loves to dig in my trash to look for some. Urgh. she doesn’t swallow it, but she will take a swat at it, lick, and chew on it. Like I said, URGH. That prompted me to change my waste basket in the room to a covered one and to just offer her an unused cotton bud as a treat when she behaves well. That’s more sanitary, right? πŸ™‚ Here she is patiently waiting for one.

How cardboard boxes saved the day

There has been tension between the kitties for some time now. I got Jello three months ago, plenty of time—I think—for Twister and Wednesday to get used to her, but they still haven’t completely taken her into the fold. The two sleep on my bed together (although they don’t cuddle), they eat side-by-side, and they often groom each other. They can share the same space with Jello, but they get prickly and hissy when she gets too close and vice versa. She’s not exactly a darling to them either. She can be a bully and start some of the fights, so I can’t blame them for not being totally cool with her.

I’ve been watching old episodes of Animal Planet’s “My Cat from Hell” (Season 1 & 2) to get an idea on how to make my purr babies get along. I’ve picked up a few tips from Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist and the host of the show, and have decided to catify my apartment more and make the place more enjoyable for the kitties. Maybe when they have a lot of things to play with Twister won’t see Jello as prey and Jello won’t see Wednesday as her punching bag (although Wednesday has started fighting back!). I’ve also increased their playtime. I normally do one-on-one sessions, but now I try to get the trio involved. They need to learn how to relax with each other!

This morning I put together a make-shift cat playhouse for them. I taped two cardboard boxes together and cut some holes in it. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but the three loved it! They sat with me while I constructed it and the whole time they were keeping a close, suspicious eye on each other, of course! And then when it was done, they took turns going in and out of the structure. The cardboard boxes have saved the day! πŸ™‚ I think I’m going to get more and make more fun houses for them! I’m enjoying the whole creating thing as well. Yay! Maybe if I’M more relaxed and not worried about the things that go on around me or my personal situation, my cats would absorb my good vibes and be less jumpy and we could all be one big happy family. πŸ™‚ We’ll see!

Happy Friday the 13th, world! Enjoy the weekend! πŸ™‚

Getting my groove back

I’ve been struggling to get my muse back for months now. No amount of pleading, heckling, and bribing could lure her back into my life. I feel spent and empty. Today I decided to take on a different approach: instead of hitting myself on the head, I followed the instructions I normally give to my students when they first start learning how to paint. I cleaned my room, set up my space, and tried my best to get into a creative mood.

20130906-221944.jpg

I did watercolor exercises the whole day to try to loosen up my brain. I used watercolor artist Lorraine Watry’s videos as a guide.

Then I filled my Moleskine watercolor journal with images of my cat. I’ll share more when I feel more confident about them ;o)

I still have a long way to go, but I think I’m on the road to getting my groove back. πŸ™‚

Okay, break time is over! πŸ™‚

Pretty in Pink

I finally gave in today and got Jello a collar and a tag with my phone number. I’ve been looking for a forever home for her for a couple of months, and the more I spend time with her the more she relaxes and trusts me, and the more she endears herself to me. I guess she’s REALLY not a foster cat anymore! Sigh. I am weak! The other morning I woke up in pain because she was kneading my thigh. I let her continue because I didn’t want her to feel rejected. Like I said—I am a wimp! πŸ™‚ Oh well.

P.S. I think she will look good in tangerine. Maybe next year. ;o)

Stray

I hope there’s a special place in Hell for people who abandon pets and hurt animals.

I was walking around Corinthian Gardens Village earlier this evening and found a sweet cat. She meowed as I passed by her, she approached me, and then started rubbing her head on my pants. She looked up and gave me another meow. I noticed right away that she was wearing a collar with a bell but no tag. I played with her for a while so I could check her condition. She was dirty but healthy. We were a block away from the EDSA entrance of the village; we walked over and I talked to the guards. Apparently she was abandoned 2 months ago (she looks like she’s 6 months old) and they’ve been taking care of her ever since. They have been taking turns feeding her and making sure that she’s inside the guard house when it starts raining. I promised them that I would come back and have her spayed. I don’t want her getting pregnant and having stray kittens.

I got extremely upset and angry when I saw her collar. How could people just abandon their pets!!! My anger dissipated, though, after I spoke with the guards. Bless them. I hope there’s a special place in Heaven for people who help abandoned pets and take care of animals.

(I apologize for the blurry pic. The cat was really frisky and lively so I could not take a good shot. That’s a good sign, though. It seems that they’ve been feeding her well. Yay!)
