Distorted Cat Portraits

I woke up with a start yesterday morning. It was 3AM and I was having an anxiety attack. I couldn’t go back to bed so I fed the cats, cleaned the litter box, and wrote and drew in my journal. I fell asleep from exhaustion at around 7.

It happened again this morning, this time at 4AM. I did the same thing, but could not go back to sleep. So I tinkered with my phone, played with PicsArt and came up with this:

The Cat from Manila

This reminded me of El Greco’s “Caballero con la mano en el pecho” (or something like that!).

El Gato y El Caballero

Twister doesn’t mind wearing a doily collar! Hah! How macho is he! 😝

So I guess I’ll be doing more of these portraits. I should do a 30-day distorted cat portrait project! That would definitely stop me from being a lapse blogger. Haha.

Little Monster

I screamed at my cats today. I’m ashamed to admit it, but I lost it earlier. I had a lot of things to do, but was not getting anything done. My internet connection was unstable and it took a minute to send text messages. To top it all off, I was still suffering from migraine postdrome (like a mental hangover after a migraine attack) and was just not present. I was trapped in a cloudy state in the bowels of my head and I was starting to fray at the edges.

Cats are very sensitive creatures so they picked up on my mood. They we’re all nervous and antsy, so that made them irritable. One wrong move and a feline rumble started. They rolled over the kitchen counter and broke a feeding bowl, a drinking glass, and my incense burner in the process. Then I lost it. I threw my wallet, my keys, a cushion at nothing in particular. I bellowed with rage and picked up the cats’ scratching lounges and threw them against the wall. One broke in half. I got all my rugs and started hitting them against the wall, scattering dust and fur in the air.Β  Then I lost steam and just sat on the floor. Then I stood up and started cleaning up.

Sometimes I feel the need to let the monster out and go on a rampage. Being a teacher and a fur mom to 5 FeLV+ cats, I don’t give in to this urge easily. I’ve trained myself to count back from 10 and breathe and exhale my anger. But I have limits and my monster needs to come outside once in a while otherwise it will fester and grow and would take over during some inopportune moment.

So I breathe in and out. In and out while I mop up my mess. Goodbye, Little Monster. Maybe I’ll see you in a year.

Tea with Maleficent

I had the weirdest dream last night. I was having tea with Maleficent Dragon. Yes, not with the witch queen, but the dragon. She was telling me that I apologize too much and that I should just stop it. I said I was sorry and she puffed smoke at me. We talked some more and she ended the conversation with an offer. She opens up her claws (Hands? Paws?) and asks me which pill I wanted to take, the red one or the blue one. And then I woke up.

I’m not sure if I made a choice and drank one of those pills, but I know that given a choice, I would like to go back there and have tea with her again. πŸ™‚

Caturday Movie Marathon

Friday night with great friends (more like family, really) turned into a chilly sleepover at the roof deck. I’m taking full advantage of my 3-day weekend (all my tutorials were miraculously cancelled—either the family was going out of town or attending an event. Yay, Teacher Steph!) by vegging with my people and now with my kitties. I am grateful! This is exactly what I needed.

I just finished watching “The Cat from Outer Space”, a campy, feline version of E.T. from the late 70s, and am preparing for the next one, “Despicable Me”. I am probably the only living being on earth who hasn’t seen the Minions in action, and I will remedy that in a bit. Part 2 is next.

So, good night, world! I shall see you in the morning. πŸ™‚

P.S. The Philippines is a tropical country and the average temperature here is 30-32*C. We’ve been having unusually cold weather the past couple of weeks; it was 16*C last night! I’m hoping for another cool night so I could thoroughly enjoy my mini-break. Good night! πŸ™‚

Oooops, I did it again

I forgot to blog. Again. In my hazy, busy state yesterday, I thought I had already posted the entry I was composing in my head. Oh well. πŸ™‚

Saturday is my busiest day of the week. I tutor the whole day and, as much as I tell myself to stay indoors on a Saturday night, I almost always end up going out with friends. Last night was quiet, though. Dinner, a drink, then home. Met some new people (which is always hard for me because I don’t have the patience for small talk, not even on texts or instant messaging!) and they were laid back and pleasant to be with. I might even see them again soon!

I have to leave in a while; I have to tutor for a couple of hours. Yes, on a Sunday. Technically I do not have a day off, but since I am freelance and I only tutor a couple of hours each day, I figured it would be okay. I’ve been doing this since October and I realize — no, confirmed — that this set up does not really work. I need a day or two to totally disconnect. I need to rearrange my schedule again soon. Sigh.

My kitties provide me with much needed entertainment, so I leave you with this photo: guess what’s behind curtain number one? πŸ™‚

I don’t think Astro is meditating.

This little hermit went out with her human friends and had a fun and relaxing day… for a change! ;o)

It’s 1:51AM, Monday. I haven’t slept yet so this will still count as my Sunday blog entry. ;o) Hah!

Good night, world! πŸ™‚

Crazy Cat Lady

Not all Cat Ladies are created equal.

I found this on the Black Cat Appreciation Group’s Facebook page yesterday. Whoever manufactured this action figure should make different versions: brunette with glasses, cats by the dozen… Hahaha. I can’t relate to this one—it’s too hot here in Manila to wear a house coat! ;o) It’s ridiculous, but I still want one! ;o)

Cheap thrills, I know, but I love this site because it makes these for you:

Instant Actress

Last Sunday I experienced a first: I became a “talent” on a film! Okay, I’m lying; I’ve been an extra before. I was the translator for “The CΓ³nsul of Sodom” when they filmed here in Manila back in 2009 and they cast me as a tobacco factory worker. I don’t think I was even seen on screen so that doesn’t count. Hahaha.

Anyway, “Extra” is not the right term to use for me this time around; it’s “actor” since I was given some lines to speak. EEEEEEP! Β For a self-conscious antisocial with stage fright, it ranks high on my list of nerve-wracking-things-I’ve-done-in-my-life-so-far. All those people staring at you… and the camera! I will probably appear on film for a total of 3 minutes, no big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it was a big step for me. I am definitely keeping my day job as an artist/art teacher/graphic designer/Spanish teacher/translator. ;o)

Thanks Nathaniel for the pictures, Marya and Jessica for the company, and Director Leo for the opportunity to be immortalized on film! πŸ™‚ Wheeeeehoooo!

“Instant Mommy” stars Eugene Domingo. It is part of Cinemalaya 2013 and will run from July 26-August 4, 2013 at the CCP, Greenbelt 3, and Trinoma.

I can see clearly now

I stopped using contact lenses about three years ago. I was having a hard time reading things so I switched back to glasses full-time; that way I could remove them when I needed to read something.

Yes, I’ve been in denial for quite some time now. I should have gotten reading glasses years ago, but I refused to. No granny glasses for me! πŸ™‚ Well, thanks to a friend who recommended me to his opthalmologist, I will never have to buy reading glasses or bifocals anymore. πŸ™‚ I went to see Dr. Abesamis last Saturday, she was very thorough and did a lot of tests, and finally gave me my prescription for multifocal contact lenses–that’s ordinary and reading glasses all rolled into one tiny lens. Amazing! The technology is fairly new here in Manila–I thought I’d have to go to the US to get them–so I was extremely excited to get my own pair. I finally got them yesterday afternoon. It’s still going to take a while to get used to, but no complaints here! πŸ™‚ My doc says I should give it a week or two and go back for adjustments if need be. Well, we’ll see, but so far, so good!

Yipeee! πŸ™‚ Now, let’s draw! πŸ™‚
